I also stood off to the left of the statue (while facing it).  One spawned right in front of me and I almost passed out when it turned out to be a rare.  Most heart-pounding catch so far!  Almost everyone was at the statue, so move off to the sides and you'll likely have the closest spawn to yourself.  Best of luck!

Got my rare as a secondary to a summit kid. They do indeed come 'attached' to other pets.

Poor Prairie Mouse.  Does nobody love you?

I just got a rare chicken as an addon to a fight with a maggot at the Ruins of Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills even though it's not listed as a possible location.

I also caught my rare on the first time, but it was right next to a deathguard.  None of the ones I found in safe areas were rares.  Is it possible that Bliz would have increased the chance of getting a rare if it's a harder taming location?

I'm also upset by this. While I'm all for helping out Japan, and I did make the purchase, I feel this just killed the uniqueness of my Hippogryph Hatchling. I used to be able to call that pet and get so many whispers about it. Now it's just an everyday, run of the mill store bought pet. Blizz really needs to take a day or two and reskin this pet.
