Cradle of the Ancients on a toon that has not done the quest there is the way to go as mentioned, as is, battling/killing off 2 of the 3 in a group of Horned Lizards.  I did notice however that most the lizards were of diff qualities and not the same as mentioned.  While waiting for these guys to respawn, I battled the group of 3 that is on the cliff above the world boss rare, and got my rare pet there.

Been farming this guy for 6 hours over 2 days.  I've seen 13 rare basiliks & countless rare squirrels, rabbits, rock vipers and even 2 rare brown marmots.  I've encountered over 100 skittering crawlers & not one rare.  I've found them as seconds to every battle pet in every part of the zone, numerous times, and even found around a dozen as primary pets in the tunnels, no rares.

Update: posted this, logged in, & first pet (squirrel) I encountered had a rare spider!

The catacombs is the place to go, if you are high enough.  I was fine as a 75 pally tank.  The hardest part is getting an unobstructed view and out of combat at the same time.  Once you figure out a technique that works for you, you never have to leave as they respawn quick enough.  Be patient, took me about an hour or so.

Whoever said go to Dragon Wastes & farm the condors was right, you don't have to leave the area and got a rare quickly.

So w/ 5.1 dropping, being lvl 90, raids being nerfed to be "soloable" and not needing groups to get in, I was super excited when I started.  Then reality set in.  I did Naxx, and as a priest couldnt solo Pathwerk so I had to get help just to get to Gluth, Spider was ok on 10m and Loatheb did on 25m for an achieve.  So there are huge variances in difficulty, oh and 0-3 pets in here.  For the day 0-4 w/ 2 bosses not being soloable.  Ah, fun times pet farming...

Was easy to do on 25-m and even ignoring spores!  Does he drop on 25m mode though?

Couldn't solo this as a shadow priest, could do a lot of dmg but couldnt overcome the melee guy on me kicking me out of range of the caster guy, and then when they switched it was all over trying to solo.  Is it possible as a s-priest?  Irritating!

This pet was ridiculous to get, post-cata. I got it on my ex-main quickly pre-cata, but last week, it took me 5 days (3 in Hinterlands). Feralas was quick, as listed yeti drop it in a few kills. Tanaris took 100+ kills outside ZF & then I did 2 full runs of ZF before it dropped. Hinterlands was absurd. 200+ kills, then did ALL the quests, then 300+ more kills. Went to BB, showed that I didn't meet requirements for OOX of my own, but turned in tanaris quest, and I got the pet!! Confusing..

I love the swamp of sorrows site. 1-2 people can farm non-stop w/ the quick respawn rates. 131 kills and it dropped! It took about 13 bags. Bag rate and def oozling rate higher than listed, atleast for me @ that location.

3 days, 3 levels (31 to 34) & 320 kills...then right after I said last kill, literally said outloud to noone in particular, "last kill" (I had a set limit of kills I'd do per day, basically based on the # of stacks of the tiny tooth junk item), this guy dropped. I squealed a little in excitement.

I normally have good luck w/ pets dropping except the Hyacinth Macaw and Firefly and evidently this pet.
Working in a counter-clockwise pattern while doing dailies you can nab tons of them, just watch for quick respawns w/ them for extra kill attemps (im sure this has been previously said).
I hit exalted w/ almost 2 toons and still this fox mocks me.

I'm so excited, this was my 4th fossil to solve (7th overall puzzle). If you don't have master flying and you want this pet or any other arch one, or mounts, get it, it's a must.
