Got this pet after three rounds around the lake. What I do is just circle around the lake constantly killing whelps along my path and that's worked so far. But it still doesn't beat when I got a dark whelpling in 4 kills in Dustwallow Marsh. Trying to get another one to get some awesome mounts and save for level 70 dragon mounts.

I feel so lucky I got this within 5 minutes at Dustwallowmarsh! Dustwallow marsh is the best place to farm this pet for my opinion. You should be at least level 50 to farm there with ease.
