So far I'm about 10 hours into this grind, about 3,000 dead. . .and no whelping.  And I got a dark whelping just lazily killing the searing whelps in dustwallow while trying to farm a rare Spawn of Onyxia.  Oh RNG!

I'm leveling like 8 pets right now, and they were all in that 12-14 range, so I basically just went around tanaris killing the local battle pets, getting mithril nodes, fishing oily blackmouths. . .basically just things to keep me busy.  Eventually (maybe 1.5 to 2 hours), a sandstorm started, and I rushed over to the gaping chasm to find it full of Silithid Hatchlings.  Got a poor quality one and left the others for other people, I'll upgrade it to a rare with the battle stones coming next patch.

After about 5 hours of mindless searching, I changed my process and finally got a poor quality one, first one I had even seen the entire process. I used my druid with flight form and made a target macro

Very fluidly I would target every tainted rat critter that spawned and I promptly killed it with moonfire. Before I had ignored all the critters.  If a minfernal spawned, it would be targeted over a rat. A minfernal spawned in one of the rat locations.

I got one while I was bored and waiting for Spawn of Onyxia's to spawn in dustwallow marsh and I was lazily killing the searing whelps that litter around the area.  Still don't have a rare Spawn of Onyxia :(

It took me hours before I even saw one of these spawn.  The competition is so ridiculous, they would literally spawn underneath me and someone else would be on it. It was hours before I even got to fight one, which was poor, and I'm ready to give up on getting a rare.  You're more likely to grind one of the whelping drops before getting a rare of these.

Update: I actually got a dark whelping by killing the nearby searing whelpings, makes up for the hours I spent :P (still no rare)

I concur, this pet is extremely sustainable for prolonged outings.  He's worth the trouble of getting a rare and leveling!

I caught my rare at the Solliden Farmstead. Rare indeed! I had to catch probably near 50 of these things!  It had 132 hitpoints.  Seems a little low to be honest, I caught many uncommons with 136-138 hitpoints.  There were many in the 121-128 hitpoint range that I just killed, I wonder if they coulda been rares too.  These are super easy though because they respawn once after death, you never have to worry about accidentally one shotting it, so fight it with any level pet.
